Today, contestants seeking to replace Kakamega Governor are on their knees, praying that Fernandes Barasa the KETRACO CEO does not heed to pressure from delegations to contest as governor. Voters are also on their knees praying that the Wanga son throws his hat in the ring and seek election as Kakamega Governor in 2022. Two sets of prayers. 

As 2022 nears, bringing news of Kenya’s annual political dispensation, many political contestants surface. Most are little known or heard of, while others have scanty or no details at all on their CV to qualify them to not only vie, but pretend to be vying for certain political seats including the much coveted governorship. A sturdy of all those expected to declare interest in the great Kakamega county gubernatorial seat has revealed lots of colorful traits, real qualifications, and proven arrays of experience in managing public resources and interests.

Of great interest, precisely on top of the qualifications scale is one Fernandes Barasa, current CEO KETRACO (Kenya Electricity Transmission Company).  To help us understand why this great son of Kakamega county, born and raised at Khaunga in Mumias East constituency, worked from his humble background to become one of Kenya’s long serving and trusted CEO’s in the energy sector, Fernandes Barasa can be summed up as one who is ready to take over the reins from outgoing governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya.

To say that Fernandes Barasa is one of Kenya’s top CEOs is an understatement, to clarify that he’s serving his second and last term at KETRACO is a clarification of the belief in him being “trusted” in that capacity. For starters, before Barasa took over as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) Limited in August 2015, who knew exactly what that government entity was?.  Okay, prior to his appointment as MD/CEO, FCPA Barasa worked as the Company’s Chief Manager (Finance & Accounts). But we can all agree that its after he took over as CEO that KETRACO hit national headlines and got rated as one of Kenya’s top companies.

FCPA Barasa attended Naitiri High School (Form 1-4) and proceeded to Kenyatta University for a B. Com (Accounting) and MBA (Finance) degrees. He has a wealth of experience in Public Finance, Risk Management, Change Management and Corporate Governance…all fertile prerequisites for a county governor that can be trusted with county resources.

He is also a trained Lead Auditor in ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems (QMS) and a Fellow of the highly influential Institute. He also served as Accounts Manager, Treasury Manager and later Head of Factories Accounts at Kenya Tea Development Agency Ltd. He also worked for Kenya Airways and East Africa Re in Senior Finance management positions. 

Basing on the above qualifications and experience in public service, we can conclude that FCPA Fernandes Barasa has attained “self-actualization” and is now ready to serve his County as next governor.
