MATUNGU: ANC'S PATH CLEARED AS OTHERS FALL OFF.
By Our Staff Writer.
THE Candidature of Peter Oscar Nabulindo the ANC Parliamentary flag bearer and a front runner in the March By election was boosted after 7 candidates were promised Ksh 1M each to step out in favour of one.
The race has now narrowed to a three-horse race after several Independent candidates who had earlier declared their interest withdrew their candidature on Thursday, January 7, 2020 to support of a new entrant Alex Lanya Wamukoya.
Candidates who met former Senators Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) and Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega), who are largely allied to Deputy President William Ruto, were pressured to step down to avoid splitting the votes and instead rally behind one candidate who will compete competitively as they mostly agreed.
Those who attended the meeting and have since pulled out of the race include the late Murunga's wife Christabel Amunga, Athman Wangara, Odanga Pessa, Omoro Mohamed and Benard Wakoli.
Immediate former Economic advisor to Kakamega Governor Paul Posho who was also in attendance is still undecided over the matter to support Lanya as he claims to be more popular on the ground.
“The various candidates agreed to support one person who will run on UDA, a party allied to the DP, while others were not decided yet,” our source who attended the meeting said.
The stage now remains with Peter Nabulindo of Amani National Congress (ANC) as a favorite, Former MP David Were of ODM and little known Benard Wakoli (Independent) as contestants to fill the vaccume.
With other candidates out of the race, it will be interesting to see how ODM and ANC will play out in the March 4 by-election as the two candidates were fierce critics of each other in the previous election.
Benard Wakoli who it is Said has refused to step down in favour of Alex Lanya of UDA is said do be demanding for Ksh 2 million teeming the promised Ksh 1 million as "too little". Wakoli, positioning himself as the third force and should ODM and ANC fail to put their houses in order then Wakoli will seek to scavenge on the fall outs.
Other candidates including Lawyer Lutta Kasamani have been termed as inconsicuential as it is claimed they are only seeking relevance by being on the ballot and will not change the already set matrix for the polls.
According to Paul Posho, Alex Lanya is not fit to contract the seat as he was involved in looting Matungu CDF in conjunction with the late MP and the then Chairman who is a contestant too.
Posho claims, Lanya is on the run from KRA after his companies failed to remit taxes on projects done during the last three years including building a police post at Wananchi area.
"It is unheard of a clean man like me to support Lanya or Athman Wangara, the two have integrity and Morality issues respectively and its them to step down for me." he said.
In Matungu, two MCAs Mayoni's Libinus Juma Oduor of Mayoni and Bonface Osanga are shouting themselves hoarse on the ground for the ODM candidate but are meeting stiff resistance selling the former MP David Were.
Voters have vowed to teach all the MCAs who don't support the ANC candidate Peter Nabulindo including Godliver Omondi a lesson in 2022.
